Forgive a bit of blatant namedropping here, but I’d have to say that lying on my couch at midnight, pinging backwards and forwards with the former US Secretary of State, remains one of the most surreal experiences of my life. It was capped only by a related incident a couple of years later when I was attending a conference in Washington, DC, that General Powell was chairing. I was engrossed in conversation with a prospective client, who was showing little interest in my sales pitch. Suddenly I felt a heavy hand slam down on my shoulder followed by a, ‘Hey, Gib, how’s it going, buddy?’ It was, of course, the General, perhaps having a bit of fun. The prospective client’s jaw-dropped expression was straight out of a Tom & Jerry cartoon, and no doubt amused General Powell just as much as it did me. A surreal experience.

Back in the real world, however, things were starting to get a bit tougher.
